My Earliest Memory of Skincare

Have you ever thought about the first time you paid attention to your skin? I was probably 10, mashing avocado with yoghurt and lemon juice, driven by curiosity and guided by YouTube. 

From Avocado Masks to Simple Skincare

I snuck the plastic container to the bathroom and smeared the mixture on my face. I retreated to my room and put cucumbers over my eyes. After a few minutes, I washed the mask off, making sure to pick out the little bits of avocado that had reached my hairline. I looked in the mirror, observed the promised ‘radiance,’ and shrugged. The DIY masks were like all the other little experiments: just fun.

Guacamole Girl would not survive boarding school. Over time, skincare would become a more strategic endeavour. It starts with assuring matrons that they’re skincare products, not food. Past raaids and other random checks, the practice of skincare becomes a question of practicality. When does one find the time to relax between excessive studying and insufficient rest What happens when no one’s in town to send more face wash?

From elaborate concoctions to careful rationing, my skincare routine has evolved into a simple yet effective routine. Reflecting on this has made me realise the value of consistency and the importance of adapting to what I have. Although life can still feel chaotic and unpredictable at times, my skincare routine remains a comforting constant. It’s more than just a series of steps; it’s a practice that provides a sense of normalcy and care.

Tips for a Consistent Skincare Routine:

  1. Keep it Simple: Start with the basics: cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting. I find elaborate routines quite complicated and hard to stick to, so I like simplicity. In the event that I’m tired or stranded, I know that bar soap and some coconut oil will hold me down.

  1. Personalize Your Routine: Choose products that suit your skin type and address your specific concerns. Everyone’s skin is unique. For the most part, my skin is clear, with or without a routine. However, I find that some ingredients and products can irritate and exacerbate certain issues.

  1. Consistency is Key: A simple, consistent routine is more effective than an occasional elaborate one. Find what works for you and stick to it. A minimum of 6 weeks of use is needed to notice a change, and certain serums and ingredients require a slow introduction.

  1. Listen to Your Skin: Your skin’s needs can change over time. Pay attention and adjust your routine as necessary. Your diet, environment, and hormones are just a few factors that can affect your skin. My face is my cycle tracker, revealing changes and imbalances.
